Checklist

1. Does the teacher have previous teaching experience and for how long?

A teacher who is devoted and can show a successful teaching record ensures the student the teacher is well versed.

2. Where did the teacher train and is the institution respectable?

It is important that you know what kind of educational background your teacher has. The teacher should be well educated in piano, theory, and music history.

3. What is the teacher capable of teaching? Can the teacher teach theory as well?

Students interested in piano will eventually be required to know some formal theory as well. The teacher should be capable of preparing a student for this task.

4. What levels is the teacher capable of teaching? All levels?

The more levels a teacher is capable of teaching successfully, the better the teacher.

5. What curriculum will the teacher follow?

Students who are serious about their musical studies should consider studying a recognized curriculum such as that of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Such pursuits can lead to obtaining high school credits. The teacher must be able to teach successfully following the stringent requirements set forth by RCM and Ontario high schools.

6. Who can the teacher teach? All ages?

A good teacher will recognize that the individual needs of a younger student are different from those of a more mature student. An experienced teacher will have different teaching styles to suit the particular student. A student must feel comfortable with the teacher.

7. Is the teaching tuition reasonable for such a teacher?

Remember that you usually get what you pay for but be cautious of those who will misrepresent themselves.
